The Chinese courtyard has gradually become an obsolete way of living. With faster pace of urbanization and densification, the disappearance of courtyards seems unavoidable.

Vertical Courtyards explores the possibility of multi-generational living in contemporary China, where the combined effects of One-child Policy, aging of the population and undeveloped social welfare system are severe. With reference to traditional Chinese architecture, especially the Chinese courtyards, this proposal aims to improve the relationship among generations, and to enhance the quality of senior living by restoring the sense of community among neighbours.
